Frank Cano is a biotechnology leader who
combines excellence in science with a strong
record of successful business decision making and
leadership. As a scientist he has achieved
worldwide recognition for his pioneering work in
developing vaccines and other biologicals.
Additionally, he has authored many papers, holds
various patents, and has been a featured speaker
at various scientific conferences. As a
businessman, he was the originator of a half billion
dollar business for Lederle, and built a promising
new vaccine based enterprise for Aviron. Next, he
led a program to devise and develop vaccines to
inoculate soldiers against 18 known agents of
biological warfare. Most recently, he has his own
consulting business that helps early stage
biotechnology companies in development, works
with large biological houses, venture companies,
and universities.
In his role as President and Chief Operating
Officer for Aviron, he provided the scientific
management experience needed to achieve two
rounds of venture financing and an important
corporate licensing deal with SmithKline
Biologicals. He also in licensed, from the NIH, a
unique influenza vaccine that is given as a nasal
spray. This product, Flu-Mist, has been shown to
be 93% efficacious in a phase III clinical trial with
1600 children. As a result, Aviron was acquired by
Medimmune for $1.2 Billion; less than ten years
after he became one of its first employees.
